Spotlight on Shropshire Schools PDF Print E-mail

altShropshire has a total of 157 Council maintained schools and 25 independent schools. They range from the very beautiful, rural primary schools such as Kinlet, Beckbury and The Dower House to what is soon to be our first very cosmopolitan Super School at William Brookes in Much Wenlock.

Here are the facts on how well our schools are performing:

‘Most children’ in Shropshire do well at school.

In 2009 Shropshire schools recorded their best ever GCSE results placing the Shropshire education area well above the national average.
 alt
In 2008 results from tests held for children aged 7, 11, and 16 show that, in most of the subjects, children at Shropshire schools did better than children in most other schools in the country.

Figures released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families in 2009 show overall grades in Shropshire Council schools are improving year-on-year.

It’s reported that standards in Shropshire schools, from nursery to secondary level, are among the highest in the country.

At the Early Years Foundation Stage Shropshire is being cited at both a national and regional level, as an authority with an “exceptional trend of improvement” over the last three years.
 alt
At Key Stage One – seven-year-olds at the end of the infant stage – assessment results are also good and above all main national indicators.

Shropshire schools report high attendance levels and low permanent exclusions.

Once young people reach the age of 16 more young people in Shropshire move on to more education, employment or training than in similar areas or nationally.

Although the target to keep the number of young people not in education, employment or training as low as possible was just missed in 2008/09, Shropshire is one of the best performers in the country.

Nearly all of the schools in the county have been awarded Healthy School Status and the Council was the first to be awarded by the Soil Association for the quality of its school meals.
