RICHARD PLEMING is the new Headmaster of Wrekin College. A Housemaster at St Edward’s School in Oxford, the 48-year-old Cambridge scholar succeeds previous Headmaster, Stephen Drew.A former Canterbury Cathedral chorister, Richard Pleming was educated at The King’s School, Canterbury, where he was Captain of School, and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he gained a first class degree in English. Before he moved into teaching in 1990, he spent a year working for Scottish Opera and then five years in corporate finance and venture capital at Schroders and 3i. He previously taught at Eton College and St Paul’s School in London.
Richard’s wife, Rachel Crowther, trained as a doctor and practised as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine with a special interest in child health. She has recently put her medical career on hold to commit herself to writing fiction full time: she is completing an MA in Creative Writing and her first novel ‘The Partridge and the Pelican’ will be published later this year.
Richard and Rachel have five children: Clemmy (20) is in her second year at St John’s College, Cambridge, where she is reading English; she is also a prolific artist on-line. Katie (18) has just taken A levels this summer and has been offered a place to read Modern Languages at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. She enjoys singing and playing the guitar in a band. Toby (15) is in his GCSE year at St Edward’s and enjoys cricket and other sports. Daphne (8) and Rowena (5) are keen singers and artists-in-the-making, as well as Sylvanian enthusiasts. They have just joined The Old Hall School this September.
Richard and Rachel have been married for 21 years, having met at university where they sang together. Apart from music, they enjoy theatre, cooking, reading, hill-walking in the Lake District and trailing through Europe in the summer with the children crammed into the back of the Ford Galaxy. Richard also enjoys sport, especially cricket and football, and scouring Oxfam for additions to his 70s rock and pop collection.
